InDrive Launches Bank Transfer Payment Feature in Nigeria

InDrive, a ride-hailing service operating across nine African countries, has introduced a bank transfer feature in Nigeria that enables cashless payments without the need for direct in-app payment integration. Dubbed “Light Cashless,” the feature allows drivers to display their preferred bank account details on the app, making it easier for passengers to copy and paste the information for bank transfers.

This makes InDrive the first ride-hailing platform in Nigeria to offer such a payment option. Unlike other ride-hailing services that rely on payment gateways, InDrive’s approach keeps things simple and avoids payment processing fees or complex integrations.

“There is no payment gateway integration,” an InDrive spokesperson clarified. “It is only a copy-and-paste mechanism that allows drivers to list their preferred accounts on their profile.”

Why InDrive Opted for Bank Transfers

A recent study by PYMNTS revealed that 41% of rideshare users prefer bank transfers as their primary payment method, highlighting the rising popularity of cashless options in Nigeria’s ride-hailing sector.

By launching Light Cashless, InDrive acknowledges this trend while distancing itself from full-scale payment services like its inDrive Money loan product recently introduced in Colombia.

Driver Reaction and Concerns

However, the new feature has received mixed reactions from drivers. Jolaiya Moses, National Treasurer for the Amalgamated Union of App-based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), expressed skepticism, noting that drivers may not see significant benefits from this new feature.

“It is the same as a card trip. The feature only benefits InDrive,” he said.

Another AUATON representative highlighted the growing trust issues between drivers and ride-hailing companies. “The app does not make itself available for most of our issues and concerns. They are practically invisible to us,” the driver said, pointing out that this could affect the adoption of the new feature.

How to Use Light Cashless

The bank transfer feature can be enabled following the latest app update. Drivers can list their bank account information within the app for passengers to copy and make payments. However, there are no plans for automated payment reconciliation, making it the driver’s responsibility to confirm receipt of payments.

What’s Next for InDrive?

As the ride-hailing sector in Nigeria continues to evolve, innovative features like Light Cashless could offer new ways to adapt to the cashless economy. However, the success of such features depends on how well they address driver concerns, rebuild trust, and meet the growing demand for seamless, affordable rides.
